been coiled formed to make the func¬
tion with the rod. This caused the im¬
mediate failure of some lamps while
others lasted for varying periods of
time.
Some of these same lamps also
broke off from their base during ship¬
ment. This shipping problem has been
corrected through the use of new pack¬
ing material. I would also believe that
the shipping problem aggravated the
weakened point in the coil causing the
failure of some lamps. These problems
have been corrected and a new group
of lamps will be supplied for the re¬
sumption of your filming in September.
2000 Watt
The problem in these lamps has
been traced to the support between
the top of the filament bridge and the
top of the bulb. The purpose of this
support is to eliminate damage to the
filament caused by shock and vibra¬
tion. It also allows the lamp to operate
at positions other than just base down
or base up without the filament struc¬
ture bending against the bulb due to
its operating temperature. This support
has been found to be too weak and is
being strengthened. Again some of
the lamps were found to be damaged
during shipment and new packing is
now being used. Our recent check of
the lamps used during your filming to
date definitely shows that 7 /3 of the
lamps experienced failure of this sup¬
port. These lamps will be replaced
prior to your September filming.

These lamps appear to be providing
normal service with the exception of
two of the lamps which have failed to
date. The first lamp which failed ex¬
perienced the normal arc within the
lamp as the coil parted upon failure.
This arc normally sunffs itself out or is
protected by the fuse which is built
into the base of the lamp. In the case
of this lamp the fuse in the base
opened but it then created an arc
within the base. Within seconds the
main tungsten rod within the lamp
melted at a point close to the base and
the hot rod fell against the bulb. The
bulb then cracked into several pieces.
A second lamp which has failed
after 80-plus hours of operation was
caused by a slight contamination
within the lamp. This contamination
caused a structural change in the
tungsten filament wire causing it to sag
and become etched. Nothing has been
found in the lamps still in service or
