to the creation of other libraries. Reggie
Lyons (son of the ASC cinematographer of
the same name) and Jack Reilly, the respec¬
tive librarians at RKO and M-G-M, decided
to form their own company, Producers Li¬

brary Service, in 1957. The Library was
intended to represent stock footage from
any number of independent producers, act¬
ing as a service to both the consignee and
the buyer. It also represents stock footage
from the Spelling-Goldberg television ser¬

Black-and-white film has, of course, ceased
to have

potential value as stock footage,
and, indeed, in the Fifties the libraries were
licensing its use at half the price of color
stock footage. Sherman Grinberg developed
additional uses for black-and-white stock

footage, and, with the John E. Allen Compa¬
ny of New Jersey (founded in 1950), remains
the major source for such film. Newsreel
film is also available at the UCLA Film
Archives (the Hearst Metrotone News), at
Fox Movietone News in New York, and at
the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
(Universal and the March of Time). Other,
smaller suppliers of black-and-white footage
are Archive Film Productions, Inc. and Killiam

unique way, in the production of film and
