Angels

Perhaps it's inevitable that a big
budget period feature starring
Robert DeNiro and Sean Penn as
convicts on the run would be sus¬
ceptible to media accounts of star
turns and production difficulties.
For the four months that
Paramount's We're No Angels shot
near
Vancouver, BC, local tabloids
generated some far-out hyperbole:
Penn had permission to okay or
nix scenes; director of photogra¬
phy Philippe Rousselot was pour¬
ing colored water on a frozen lake
in order to fake its liquefied state;
a major monastery set - part of a
border town built by production
designer Wolf Kroeger - had
blown away; and the veteran
Vancouver crew, under the super¬
vision of director Neil Jordan, was
unprepared for the harsh Cana¬
dian winter production schedule.
