president. Angenieux is the seventh re¬
cipient of the award, which was estab¬
lished in 1980. Its purpose is to recognize
long-term accomplishments by an indi¬
vidual who has made outstanding contri¬
butions toward the advancement of the
sciences or the technology of the motion

picture. The award is named in honor of
the last sound director of the Samuel

Goldwyn Studio.

Angenieux
is an internationally famed optical de¬
signer. Now 82 years old and retired,
Angenieux' work in lens design, develop¬
ment and manufacturing became the
state-of-the-art, especially in his zoom
and wide angle lenses developed for 16
and 35mm cinematography. During his
career he worked closely with many film
directors, including Abel Gance, for
whom he developed the "pictograph," an
optical system for lining up a small-scale
foreground with a full-scale background.

Angenieux at the Academy's Scientific
Technical Awards ceremonies
March 3.
