The PaintAmation System in¬
cludes FrameThrowerTM, a powerful
videographics processor with an optional
analog video interface module support¬
ing real-time, feed through, full-color
component NTSC or PAL video digitizing
directly into the FrameThrower image
memory and display. The analog inter¬
face is programmable across a range of
broadcast resolutions including 601compatible operation in sampled analog
4:4:4:4 mode. A unique feature is the
alpha channel processing which can
frame grab a separate matte channel
input in parallel with RGB channels.
Optionally, the board can
compute luminance values from RGB on
the fly and store these in the alpha chan¬
nel instead of an external matte input.
The system is designed to accept a digi¬
tal CCIR 601 I/O board in the future.
The FrameThrower processor
includes eleven Symbolics designed in¬

tegrated circuits as well as many ad¬
vanced VLSI chips to accelerate both
video and graphic processing. This re¬
sults in significant acceleration in paint
operations that include: soft-matting,
rotation, scaling brushes, color space
conversions, and shape operations.
