without a narrator was exciting for

A dedicated film buff,
Glassman also had a chance to use

many favorite sequences in Visions.
He never forgot the scene in 1932's
Possessed where Joan Crawford is

standing outside watching a train
by. "It's one of the most incred¬
ibly composed studio shots I've
ever seen," he notes. "I was happy
that it found a way into the film,
and that it illustrated a very specific
point that Allen Daviau described."

Glassman tried to avoid shots that
have appeared too often in other
film anthologies, opting instead for

rarely seen sequences. "And when¬
ever I could, I'd inject a little humor
into the documentary," he adds.
Glassman notes that some docu¬
mentaries are like vitamins:

"They're good for you without nec¬
essarily being enjoyable." He didn't
want a fluff piece either: "It was a
balance between being informative
and entertaining."
Even though studios were
gracious about lending material,
not all the material

was

in the best

condition. "Even though we got the
best available clips, some of them
were far from
perfect," he recalls.
Sometimes the source material was
faded or significantly different than
the source material from another
studio-the various studios didn't

necessarily use the same methods
of perservation. Glassman also re¬
quested that the clips be in their
original aspect ratios (1.85 'Scope,
1.33). 'Tor the HD version, we tried
