We begin by thanking the outgoing Chairman, Jeff Daggett, for his outstanding service to the Council, and we start a new fiscal year full of opportunities for your Council to move our industry forward. preliminary results from the ACEC 2007–2008 Design & Construction Industry Trends Survey show that fewer than 10 percent of participating member firms use design-build, even though it is reported to be an increasingly prevalent delivery system. The Survey also reveals Building Information modeling (BIm) as the next popular wave; only 15 percent of respondents currently use BIm. And the most pressing concern for Council members remains the shortage of engineers. Find this and other important employment, financial and business-practice data in the Survey, which will be available in August from the ACEC Bookstore. The results of another ACEC survey—the ACEC professional Liability Insurance Survey—are in this issue of Engineering Inc. (See page 23.) Insurance premiums continue to remain stable, although there is uncertainty for the future. This edition of Engineering Inc. also takes a close look at one of the most impressive engineering achievements of our time, Boston’s Central Artery/ Tunnel project, known as the “Big Dig.” The article highlights the extraordinary magnitude of the project, on scale with the panama Canal and other great engineering feats. Your Council continues to underscore the remarkable contributions made by our industry, even as we lobby for legislation crucial to the health of our businesses and country. The 2008 Engineering Excellence Awards Call for Entries in this issue begins the annual process of recognizing our latest achievements. And don’t forget to register for the upcoming ACEC Fall Conference in beautiful maui, Sept. 26–29. We guarantee you a great time! Orrin B. macmurray David A.
