THIS STUDY InVESTIgATED the five-factor structure of the Resident Assistant cultural Diversity (RAcD) instrument, which assesses resident assistant (RA) confidence in addressing issues of cultural diversity in college and university residence halls. The instrument has five components that explore RA confidence: (1) belief in the need for cultural diversity training, (2) confidence working with culturally diverse residents, (3) belief in the existence of racism in residence halls, (4) confidence in the ability to handle racial conflict, and (5) belief in the power of the resident assistant to bring about cultural understanding. confirmatory factor analysis of the sample data supported the factor validity of the RAcD. The instrument appears useful for determining RA confidence in addressing issues of cultural diversity in residence halls.

Long before the academy viewed the understanding of cultural diversity as a critical component of what “constitutes an educated person,” student affairs professionals have been at the forefront of promoting this piece of intellectual development (Pope, Reynolds, & Mueller, 2004, p. 162). As practitioners, it is widely understood that college and university residence halls provide the greatest opportunity to expand students’ cultural knowledge about one another. Such expansion of knowledge is mostly facilitated by resident assistants (RAs), as they are important links to satisfaction with the college experience felt by students living in residence halls (Elleven, Allen, & Wircenski, 2001). Resident assistants are often the first persons whom residents seek out for help with problems related to the college experience, making it important that they receive current and effective training that enables them to assist residents through the challenges experienced in college.
