Skill Development
When reflecting on their experiences, the participants described myriad skills they developed while participating in hall government. They discussed how well prepared they felt for their post-college experiences—often because of their experiences with residence hall leadership—in the following competencies: organizational and administrative responsibilities, interpersonal relationship building, ability to reflect on their experiences, and general problem solving.
Participants consistently mentioned the large amount of time they spent in meetings as student leaders . While they felt these meetings were productive, they sometimes struggled with the number that they had to attend . On the other hand, these alumni left college understanding the importance of meeting etiquette in the workforce.

They shared several stories about how their professional colleagues came to meetings underprepared, without a planned agenda, or unable to stay focused on the topic at hand. One participant stated, “I learned very quickly [from my undergraduate leadership position] what it takes to facilitate a meeting.” Council leadership also taught them how to be good colleagues in meetings. One participant, currently serving as a special education teacher at a large school, reflected upon learning about speaking up in meetings: “Being a

Using a constant comparative method of data analysis, we identified three general themes. The first, best described as skill development, is related to the types of practical competencies students developed over the course of their experiences in hall governments. The second, value development, described how students’ personal values changed and strengthened through their hall government involvement.
