Resident Assistants as Rule Enforcers
Discussion Questions
1. As practitioners, how are resident assistants (RAs) trained to manage role conflicts? What training could help resident assistants acquaint themselves with the dual role of enforcer and friend? In what ways do we formally and informally help them to prioritize roles? Within that prioritization, are we upholding university, departmental, or personal priorities? 2. This study suggests that university and departmental organizations, structures, policies, and procedures may increase RA role conflict within the position. What policies and procedures at your institution or department contribute to role conflict for RAs? How could these policies be changed to reduce or eliminate conflict? How could residence life administration decrease potentially unfair or differential policy enforcement by resident assistants? 3. As the authors of this article suggest, students in RA positions are expected to fill many roles (peer, friend, rule enforcer). How do these varying roles affect a floor or hall community? Do all of the roles appropriately meet the needs of your campus’s residential communities? 4. Eliminating the role of rule enforcer from an RA job description is one suggestion for reducing role conflicts within the position. Is that practical? What implications would removing the role of rule enforcer have on the personal development of a resident assistant? 5. Some respondents indicated that their status as upper-division students made it difficult to develop friendships with residents. These same respondents expressed the importance of maintaining personal relationships with residents. Do you believe friendships are more easily created when resident assistants are closer in age to their residents? What role can or should age play in the selection and placement of resident assistants? 6. What role conflicts exist in our positions as student affairs practitioners? How do we model managing these conflicts for our students? What are the positive and negative results of role conflicts in our respective positions?
