Privacy Acquisition Strategies of Roommates

Often, there was a time element involved: "My
roommate asked me for an hour of privacy"
or the roommate "verbally told me that they
were wondering if it would be okay to have
the room alone for a while." Sometimes the
roommate was simply denied access to the
room as in the following example: "They
locked the door on me when I walked out to
use the restroom." These types of strategies
represented 10% of the total sample.

Non-strategies
The third set of strategies resulted from roommates who did not pursue the issue, either
because it was not necessary due to need or
schedules or because they did not think it was
appropriate to make a request. This category
accounted for 21%. Examples included "My
roommate was never in the room to begin
with," "I was just able to ﬁgure it out, if he was
with his lady friend, I usually just leave them
alone," "We understand each other without
being asked when the other needs to be alone,"
and "I didn't communicate this because I didn't
want to kick her out of her own room."

Correlations Between Strategies
Correlations were performed on the strategies,
and there were three signiﬁcant correlations
for the set of previously arranged strategies
only. Reported use of argot strategies (indirect
symbols that were unique to the roommates)
was correlated with the use of conventional
symbols. Reported use of conventional symbols
was also correlated with direct requests.
Finally, reported use of direct requests was
correlated with argot strategies. There were
no correlations between any of the spontaneous strategies. This suggests that roommates
who proactively negotiated how privacy would
be obtained before the need arose utilized
several different strategies to achieve this goal.
In other words, if a roommate was likely to use
one type of previously arranged strategy, they
were likely to use another previously arranged
strategy. (See Table 3.)
To test for gender differences in the use
of strategies, an analysis of variance was performed. There were no gender differences in
terms of strategy use, F(1, 162) = 0.11, p > .05.
