at a large Australian university located in the
state of Queensland. Although the study was
led by and funded through the international
arm of the university, the Community Impact
Study was designed to explore perceptions and
beliefs in the community about off-campus
housing for students of higher education institutions in the wider geographic area, such
as other local universities and vocational training institutions. For purposes of this study, the
term community member is used to describe the
entire cohort of individuals who participated in
this study, including local residents, businesspeople, students, and others living or working
in the neighboring suburbs of two campuses
of the university.
This evaluative study employed a mixed
methods approach to identify the impact of
off-campus student housing on a local Australian community. With mixed methods research, both qualitative and quantitative data
collection and analysis techniques can be used
in either parallel or sequential phases adapting to each research aim (Patton, 2002). This
study involved two sequential phases using
two different evaluation tools: a survey in
Phase One and focus groups in Phase Two.
In the ﬁrst phase of the study, a survey was
conducted to seek demographic information
(quantitative) and to better understand the
experiences of community members and students through their responses to open-ended
questions (qualitative). In the second phase,
a series of focus groups were conducted in
an effort to gain multiple perspectives on key
issues (qualitative) raised in the survey results,
including but not limited to student safety and
landlord management issues.

needs to reﬂect the diverse nature of

It is widely agreed that a study can be
strengthened by mixing different types of
methods (Greene & Caracelli, 1997). As
opposed to using the immense variety of research methods associated with qualitative
or quantitative traditions, mixed methods research provides a better opportunity for understanding research questions. The research
questions for this study emerged from an
observed need by the university and the surrounding community:
the large presence of students living in
neighborhoods?
conversion of residential properties into
student housing?
tertiary institutions, housing authorities, and
local government ofﬁcials been to concerns
about substandard housing raised by
community members?
