plays offer the opportunity to practice certain
ethical skills such as being honest with residents and supervisors, not making promises
one cannot keep, and knowing what is right
and acting accordingly (Blimling, 2010).
During staff training, the issue of ethical
acculturation could be introduced (Anderson, 2009; Anderson & Handelsman, 2010;
Handelsman, Gottlieb, & Knapp, 2005). RAs
may assume that developing moral behavior and ethical skills is an automatic process
and can be accomplished by participating in
trainings, attending meetings, and receiving
supervision. These activities have their place.
However, RAs might be better prepared for difﬁcult moral and ethical decisions by assessing
the match or ﬁt between their personal motivations for becoming an RA and both the ethics
of origin they bring with them into the RA role
and the ethical culture of the student affairs
profession.

LIMITATIONS AND
DELIMITATIONS
In addition to having their multiple roles
highlighted and hearing from former RAs, participating in role plays could be an important
way for new RAs to learn and gain skills for
how best to communicate with their residents,
especially about the topic of policy violations.
The RAs could also be presented with a script
of what to say when they are ﬁrst presenting
the policies to residents. Blimling (2010) suggests a script that states, "The University has
this policy; the reason for this policy is . . ."

that participants may have withheld information about their inability to hold residents
accountable for policy violations because of
one researcher's connection to the institution where the study occurred. Regarding delimitations, this study was conducted at one
institution: a large, public, four-year, comprehensive institution located in the Mid-Atlantic region where RAs are trained in a group
setting twice a year.
