Moral Behavior of Resident Assistants

Discussion Questions
1. The authors equate the moral behavior of RAs with always holding students accountable
for apparent violation of policy by documenting the incident. Might there be a moral reason
for an RA to not follow explicit instructions to document apparent violations of policy?
2. Participants in this study described an inherent conﬂict between the job responsibilities of
developing relationships with residents and enforcing policy. Use a student development
theory as a foundation to determine why this challenge may exist. Presuming these are
typical responsibilities, how would you coach RAs to handle this apparent conﬂict?
3. All the participants in this study were employed as RAs at the same institution. Do you
believe RAs at your institution would respond similarly?
4. Is it reasonable to expect that RAs, typically undergraduate students, will have a higher
degree of moral development than other students? Why or why not?
5. A qualitative methodology (face-to-face interviews) was used in this study. Why was this
approach appropriate given the research question?
6. What are some innovative training techniques that would help RAs assume a more
comfortable role in student discipline?
