DISCUSSION
Regardless of whether or not a student is residing in a learning community on a college
or university campus, they need to know that
their basic needs are being met so they can
concentrate on their academic needs. Having a
place to live that is clean and affordable as well
as one that provides staff capable of responding to other daily needs is one way to tend to
students' academic needs. In addition, providing the framework of a learning community can help students gain significantly higher
levels of satisfaction with their living and learn-
ing experience. According to Gabelnick (1986),
the value of learning communities to students
includes making friends and achieving a sense
of belonging, experiencing how to learn collaboratively, gaining confidence, being able to
appreciate the perspectives of others, understanding themselves as learners, and beginning to feel comfortable with the complexity of
the academic environment.
The interviews that we conducted during
the 2008 study revealed that there was confusion about the purpose of the learning community. Students were unclear as to whether
it was a wellness community or a substancefree community, and this confusion stalled activities and programming. The interviews with
