Strengths-Based Approaches

Discussion Questions
1. As the authors noted, using the strengths concept and employing strengths-based
programming created a common language for students, staff, and faculty. The pervasive
application of the concept meant that students were frequently connecting their
experiences at the institution. What are some other strategies or models that could be used
to create a common campus language?
2. The data suggest that the one-on-one conversations between students and residence hall
paraprofessional staff were especially impactful. Investigate whether the RAs/CAs on your
campus are expected to conduct intentional one-on-one interactions with students. How is
this expectation executed? How is it monitored? If this is not a current expectation for the
position, would you recommend that it be included? Why/why not?
3. The authors suggest a number of programmatic uses of the strengths concept (e.g., use in
roommate agreements). What other ideas would you contribute to this list?
4. In what ways does use of the strengths concept support the developmental phases typical
of ﬁrst-year students?
5. Students are sometimes criticized for lack of motivation and engagement; this is
particularly true of male students (perhaps as evidenced by the uneven participation rate
of female students in this survey/study). What are some factors that might explain this
perceived lack of motivation and engagement by male students?
6. The strengths-based approach emphasizes the importance of personalizing the college
or university environment. What do you know about student development theory that
supports this approach, and how does this apply to the residence halls?
7. The study spoke of a campus commitment to creating a strengths-based, positive culture. If
you looked at your campus from an outside perspective, what message is conveyed to new
students about their ability to succeed?
