Letter from the Editor
The spring 2016 edition of The Journal of College and University Student
Housing offers a diverse collection of both interesting and important
matters for the ﬁeld of college and university housing. You may note
the speciﬁcation of the "spring 2016 edition." That is because we
are excited to ofﬁcially announce the addition of a fall edition to The
Journal beginning in the fall of 2016. The additional volume allows for
timelier sharing of research and critical issues in our practice. We are
grateful to Von Stange and the entire executive board of ACUHO-I for
committing the resources needed to make this happen.
The manuscripts in this issue are both stimulating and intriguing.
Study ﬁndings, implications for practice, and suggestions for future
research lay the groundwork for truly promising practice in student
housing. Rachael Stark and Sharon Anderson offer a revealing view of
moral behavior and the resident assistant experience. Deborah Taub, R.
Bradley Johnson, and Torry Reynolds share ﬁndings from an ACUHO-I
study of gender-neutral housing across the country, with timely implications for practice as more institutions consider this housing option.
The issue of resident loneliness is explored in a study by William
Henninger IV, Anastasia Osbeck, Elaine Eshbaugh, and Christopher
Madigan, with the authors providing signiﬁcant implications for
housing staff wanting to address this pressing issue. William Frazier
and Myron Eighmy identify critical components of a successful wellness living-learning community following intentional changes implemented as the result of low student satisfaction. Finally, Krista Soria
and Leonard Taylor, Jr. discuss the value of strengths-based approaches
in housing and residence life, with important implications for ﬁrst-year
student retention and engagement.
Deborah Taub, R. Bradley Johnson, and Daniel Calhoun served as
guest editors for the special issue on resident assistants. I appreciate
the meticulous work put into creating a comprehensive issue complete
with diverse, educational, and applicable articles for our readers. I also
value their willingness to have astute graduate students in their courses
compose discussion questions for each manuscript.
The historical trends article by Jamie Singson, Amanda Tachine, Charlotte Davidson, and Stephanie Waterman utilizes the 1991 work of Verna
Kirkness and Ray Barnhardt on First Nations and higher education to
