5. How do the emergency situations that both students and entry-level professionals deal with
impact their professional boundaries when it comes to work/life balance?
6. How does age/level of experience mediate tendencies toward heroism in residential life
practitioners?
7. In your opinion, how do upper-level administrators tie into the emergency preparedness/
risk management portions of higher education and, more specifically, residential life?
8. In addition to the ethnographic information provided in this study, what other sources
would have been helpful in gathering information and assisting with this study?
9. How does intersectionality of identities play into this discussion of the hero mindset? Are
some identities more likely than others to compel students to act the hero?
10. One of the study participants commented that "our instinct as leaders is to make sure that
everybody else is protected, and that's what we do" but wasn't sure what she would do
if she heard gunfire: Should she fight or flee? What are the pros and cons of RAs acting as
protectors in higher education and, more specifically, in residential life?
11. How do social media play into the heroism idea that has developed within residential life?
12. Does the potential for their peers to view the entry-level staff member as a hero lead to the
"I have to save the day, every day" mentality? Why or why not?
13. The author comments, "In retrospect, the RAs and RDs who were not actively involved in
the emergency response reported feelings of helplessness and anxiety." Many felt helpless,
guilty, and unsure about living up to their responsibilities if they were not able to help in a
crisis. Is this feeling of anxiety a good thing or a bad thing? Where is the balance between
these feelings and being okay about not being directly involved with a situation?
