Discussion Questions
1. In addition to the topics suggested by the author for future studies on RA training (i.e.,
student mental health issues, students with disabilities), what other topics might be
included in future studies on RA training? What topics do you currently include in your RA
training? What other topics might you include?
2. The author suggests that the most frequently used teaching methods for pre-service RA
training were lectures, discussions, and role plays. What other teaching methods (mentioned
in the study and separate from the study) might you employ in your RA training?
3. What experiences do you have with RA training (either as an RA or as an RA educator)? Is
or was your RA training effective? How could it be improved?
4. Why do you think student development theory has not been incorporated more into RA
training? How might it be incorporated more?
5. A vital area of RA training is listing job expectations. In what area do you feel it best to
include the expectations that employers have of RAs?
6. In the course of their education, RAs often become familiar with textbooks and manuals.
Do you feel that it is effective to have an RA training manual? What would be the
advantages of having a manual compared to the disadvantages of not having one?
7. The RA position is grounded in student leadership. What are the benefits of including
veteran RAs in the training process? How might including them benefit you, your
department, and/or your RAs as a whole?
8. With each RA staff there will be multiple different personalities and learning styles. What
are the benefits of completing personality or learning style assessments at the beginning of
your training? How will the knowledge of your RAs' personalities or learning styles play into
the training process? Will this knowledge hinder or help your training process?
