Discussion Questions
1. Considering the context of your institution, what would it look like to establish culturallythemed housing? What opportunities or challenges would you expect for professional
and student staff members overseeing and living in those communities? What training or
capacity building is or would be required for departmental staff members at all levels?
2. The authors discuss the notions of White fragility and White racial dominance. If you were
a member of the housing staff at the University of Connecticut, what would your response
be to the comments presented in this article? Craft a press release addressing the critics of
the ScHOLA2RS House.
3. How can housing professionals engage the university and surrounding community
in conversations related to race, racism, power, privilege, and oppression? What
responsibility, if any, do housing professionals have as educators for the campus
community and beyond?
4. Given the need to create welcoming spaces, particularly in university-owned housing
facilities, how can you alter, add, or remove current living-learning communities, housing
options, and/or policies to support underserved and under-supported students?
5. What other marginalized groups would benefit from themed housing options at your
institution? What resources or support would you need to make those options a reality?
6. What influence does public discourse have on the decision-making behaviors in your
department or institution?
