hoc analysis revealed that RAs working in a
balanced-mix community had significantly
higher levels of personal accomplishment than
RAs working with mostly first-year students
(-5.99, p < .05, 95% CI [-11.296, -0.685]), but
no other variables were significantly different
between the groups.

outliers (Tabachnick & Fidell, 2007). Based on
a review of skewness and kurtosis statistics, all
burnout data were approximately normal.
Levene's test assumed homogeneity of variances for each dimension of burnout: emotional exhaustion (p = .676), depersonalization (p =
.063), and personal accomplishment (p = .323).
A statistically significant difference emerged
between RA employment choice groups in depersonalization scores, t (112) = -2.856, p < .01,
d = .667, and personal accomplishment scores,
t (111) = 2.281, p < .05, d = .615. The Cohen's
d statistic indicated a medium effect size for
both variables (Cohen, 1988). However, RA
employment choice in emotional exhaustion
scores, t (110) = -1.681, p = .096, revealed no
statistically significant difference. Table 4 displays all statistical results.
Employment Choice and RA Burnout
Independent samples t-tests investigated differences in emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment scores
between employment choice groups. Emotional exhaustion scores were computed for 95 RAs
who chose to return and for 17 who chose not
to return the following year (n = 112); depersonalization scores were computed for 96 RAs
who chose to return and 18 RAs who chose not
to return the following year (n = 114); and personal accomplishment scores were computed
for 95 RAs who chose to return and 18 who
chose not to return the following year (n = 113).
