burnout and job satisfaction. The results of the
Pearson correlation (see Table 5) indicated that
there was a significant negative relationship
between job satisfaction and both emotional
exhaustion (r = -.447, p < .001) and depersonalization (r = -.517, p < .001). The relationship
between job satisfaction and personal accomplishment was significant and positive (r =
.462, p < .001). Lower personal accomplishment suggests higher burnout, and higher
levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization also suggest high burnout; thus,
there is a significant relationship between
higher burnout and lower job satisfaction in
each dimension.
DISCUSSION
Addressing Dated and Conflicting
Findings
The findings of this study contribute to the
understanding of RA burnout with respect to
RA gender and community composition. First,
results support the lack of difference between
male and female RA emotional exhaustion
levels (Fuehrer & McGonagle, 1988; Hardy
& Dodd, 1998) while contradicting the assertion that female RAs experience significantly
higher levels of emotional exhaustion (Hetherington et al., 1989). It is difficult to determine
a reason for the discrepancy because both
Hetherington et al. (1989) and the current
study employed similar methodologies. Both
focused on Midwestern public institutions,
and both had similar sample sizes (113 and
153, respectively). A notable difference is that
the current study surveyed four institutions
while Hetherington et al. focused on a single
institution. Additionally, more than 25 years
elapsed between the studies. However, these
two reasons do not sufficiently explain the difference in results between Hetherington et al.
and Fuehrer and McGonagle (1988).
The current study also provides support for
all but one previous research study (Fuehrer
& McGonagle, 1988) on gender differences in
the personal accomplishment dimension. That
