Revisiting Resident Assistant Burnout
Discussion Questions
1. The purpose of this study was to provide some updated research on RA burnout, given
that much of the research on the topic is dated. Given the notable changes in the nature of
situations RAs must now deal with, would you expect burnout rates to be different than in
the past? What is known about burnout among the RAs on your campus?
2. At face value, it seems logical that higher degrees of emotional exhaustion and
depersonalization correspond to lower levels of job performance. Given this, what is the
value of testing the relationship between these variables? Can you describe a scenario
where this might not be the case?
3. The author admits that the demographics of the study sample is a limitation in regard to
applying the results broadly. Speculate on how burnout may be the same and how it may
be different for RAs who identify as members of minoritized groups as compared to RAs
who identify as members of non-minoritized groups.
4. The author suggests that "supervisors should make it a priority to encourage RAs to
leave campus and spend time away from their communities" as a strategy for combating
burnout. While most would agree that this can be effective, are there drawbacks to this
strategy? What other strategies might supervisors employ to reduce the likelihood of RA
burnout?
5. The primary intent of an RA training program is to prepare these staff members for their
job responsibilities and increase the level of success. Because the RA position deals with
serious issues such as sexual assault, suicide, and relationship violence, training on these
topics is necessary but may reinforce the high stakes nature of the job. Consider how
training content and delivery could be designed so as to develop RA competency but not
contribute to the real and perceived stress in handling these situations.
6. How might supervisors identify and reduce emotional exhaustion in RAs before it impacts
job performance?
