AS COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY HOUSING OPERATIONS
GROW IN IMPORTANCE to the educational and fiscal
missions of their home institutions, so, too, does the
complexity of housing work. These developments have
evolved alongside the challenging realities of high turnover
and limited advancement potential within the housing
field (Dunkel & Schreiber, 1992). Given these longstanding
realities and the emerging complexity of student housing
work, what should housing professionals know and be able
to do in order to effectively execute current responsibilities
and prepare for increasingly complex duties in future roles
within the field? We explore the past, present, and future of
housing professional competencies, providing context from
the larger student affairs literature. We also examine in
depth the evolution of the housing field's conceptualization
and utilization of professional competencies. We consider
theoretical, empirical, and applied dimensions to trace
the evolution of housing professional competencies over
the last 25 years and offer recommendations for the field
moving forward.

As the field of college and university housing administration has
evolved as a profession over the last 30 years, so, too, has our shared
understanding of those competencies deemed critical to an individual's current and future success in the field. In a complex and
ever-changing field, what should a campus housing professional
know and be able to do? Further, how are housing professionals
at various levels of the organization being prepared to execute responsibilities that grow increasingly complex as these professionals
advance through the organizational hierarchy?

Riker (1980) described the housing professional as a "coordinator, facilitator, consultant, teacher, administrator, counselor, change
agent, planner, and researcher" (p. 177). With such a broad scope
of responsibilities facing the housing administrator, how does one
