sors. As we look forward to the next step in the
evolution of competencies in student housing,
it will be critical to continue discussions on
leveraging the body of knowledge in practice.
As Cawthon et al. (2012) recommend, rubrics
should be developed locally and in consideration of particularistic campus needs so that
professional development plans benefit the
individual as well as the department and institution. Additionally, further research will
be necessary to understand how the body of
knowledge is being used and by whom. The
body of knowledge serves as the learning
model for the global housing profession, but
its value to housing administrators is limited
by the ways in which it is communicated and
utilized at the departmental level and within
supervisor/supervisee relationships.
Given the constantly changing nature of
the role of student housing within the higher
education context, it will be important for
practitioners and researchers to continue
exploring the role-specific competencies required of housing professionals. Housing
operations often navigate a fine line between
being a revenue-generating auxiliary and a developmentally focused educational center. The
complex interrelationship between these outcomes ensures both the ongoing demand for

housing operations and the need for a deeper
understanding of the specific knowledge and
skills required of those individuals who make
student housing their profession.
Following themes from the literature,
future research should seek to deepen our
understanding of those skills that define the
work of the housing professional apart from
the larger skillset required of student affairs
professionals generally. Research efforts may
seek to validate the NHTI competencies and
ACUHO-I's body of knowledge through novel
empirical methods. Further, the field is in need
of a deeper understanding of the interaction
between perceived professional competencies
and demographics such as race, ethnicity, and
gender identity. Clarifying professional competencies may prove of little value if the development of those competencies in practice is not
considered in relationship to individual perspectives, values, and orientations.
Though
many
questions
remain
to be answered, the profession now has
a clearer sense of the outcomes that housing
professionals must demonstrate in their work.
With the destination increasingly in focus, it is
now time for the association and housing administrators themselves to map a more explicit road
to professional competence.
