or improvement in retention (no matter how small)
is considered important and noteworthy.
Student Experiences
The final research question aimed to understand how participating in the FIT program
influenced students' experiences with personal
growth, leadership and campus engagement,
academics, and career development. These
issues, in addition to students' general experiences in the program, were explored in the
focus group sessions and are outlined below.
General experiences in the LLP. Overall,
FIT students reported a very positive experience
in the program. Specifically, they noted that the
community was friendly, open, and supportive,
and they enjoyed being around students with
similar interests. One student reflected that
living in the FIT community was a
great way to make friends, especially people
that had similar interests as me. . . . You find
in other places that kids don't necessarily find
friends that have the similar interests as you
so I thought that was a nice unique aspect to
this building.
It was clear that, for FIT students, their residence hall community was an important part
of their college experience. One participant
noted, "It's helped me meet some of my best
friends that I have now and I probably wouldn't
have ever met them without this program."
Several focus group participants described
the social relationships they had developed
with other students in the program as being
"like family." As one participant said,
FIT brings us all together. I've been in other
people's rooms [and residence halls] before
and you go in the lounge and there is nobody
out there hanging out talking. But [in FIT]
we are always out there, everybody is like
"hey" or when we are in class you know pretty
much everyone [in class lives] on this floor . . .
you're just kind of all like a big family.
