The continuum was created from participant data, and then the primary researcher
went back to evaluate each participant based on
the new continuum. The placement of a participant on the continuum is not an indication of
their work satisfaction or success. Further, the
continuum is not a static scale but a dynamic
instrument that allows participants to change
as they chose to set more boundaries or more
effectively uphold them. Participants in this
study were given a numeric value corresponding with their placement on the continuum for
each of the three dimensions of residence life:
space, interpersonal life, and time management. In some cases, a single participant may
have been a full integrator for one dimension
and an integrative segmentor for another.

What follows is an exploration of the
study findings as they were used to create
this new continuum, as well as an analysis of
how the findings are understood in light of
the continuum. The presentation and discussion of findings is organized around the three
dimensions where residence life professionals experience significant boundary management decisions.
BOUNDARIES OF RESIDENCE
LIFE PROFESSIONALS
By looking at the participants' placement
for each dimension and their average scores
overall (see Table 4), the primary researcher
could better understand the nuanced experiences of the participants. Full integrators feel
that work and personal time flow together,
which may or may not be an issue for them.
They create fewer boundaries between work
and their personal lives. Integrative segmen-
Space Boundaries
The term space boundaries refers to how participants used personal spaces and physical
separation to adapt to living in the environment where they work. Creating a space to get
away from work was an act of boundary setting
and also a coping strategy used to manage the
integrative environment in which they lived
and worked.
