The Net Effect of Student
Accommodation for Pacific Students

with living in a first-year residential college for
Pacific students.
Using the suggested effect size guidelines for
small, moderate, and strong associations from
odds ratio comparisons (Chen, Cohen, & Chen,
2010), the data in Table 4 confirm, for the unadjusted models, that living in a residential
college in their first year of study has a strong
positive association with Pacific students' firstyear success in all measures examined. When
accounting for the effect of the first-year grade
When age and differences in school qualification were accounted for, living in a residential college had no significant benefit to
students passing all their papers. However,
for passing at least half of year one papers,
FYGPA, student retention, and degree completion there remained a small to moderate
but significant advantage for Pacific students
living in a residential college.
