Discussion Questions
1. Why would idiosyncratic state laws on alcohol or other drugs make enforcement of policies
on a college campus more challenging?
2. What rationales are provided for restricting student use of legal alcohol or drugs on college
and university campuses?
3. Aside from student safety, what other reasons does the article outline as an argument for
why student housing professionals should be aware of and reinforce legal restrictions on
drug use within campus housing?
4. What correlations, positive and negative, does this article provide for student drug and
alcohol use while in college?
5. One of the questions raised by the results of this study is why drug and alcohol violations
in on-campus housing is higher in states with legal medical or recreational marijuana.
Based on the information provided, why might this be the case? How could housing
professionals use this information to frame policies to discourage drug abuse among
students living on campus?
