THOUGH LAUDED AS A BEST PRACTICE, GENDERINCLUSIVE HOUSING has engendered little empirical
attention. This study explored the experience of genderinclusive housing from the perspective of trans* students.
While they were overwhelmingly positive in their
appreciation for the existence of this housing option,
issues of access, training, and the regulating gaze of
cisgender stakeholders circumscribed the experience.
Recommendations for moving from a "better than most"
provision to an intentional practice that serves trans*
students' flourishing are provided.

Trans* and non-binary students are growing in number on college
and university campuses (Marine, 2011; Nicolazzo, 2016). As a
result, some universities are just beginning to identify inadequacies in their provision of services and programming and resolving
to adopt practices and policies that are responsive to the existence
of trans* students. Gender-inclusive housing (GIH) has been
heralded as a best practice for supporting trans* and non-binary
students (Beemyn, Curtis, Davis, & Tubbs, 2005; Trans* Policy
Working Group, 2014). According to the documents created by the
Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals'
Trans* Policy Working Group, gender-inclusive housing should
(a) be available for both new and returning students; (b) be separate from an LGBTQ-themed floor; (c) be open to all students, not
just trans* students; (d) be offered in different parts of campus
and as different types of housing; and (e) include gender-inclusive
bathrooms. Since housing has traditionally been created based on
an assumption that gender is fixed and binary, more than 80% of
transgender students reported they did not have access to genderappropriate housing (Seelman, 2014). Moreover, gender-segregated
facilities are potential sites of harassment and violence for individuals whose gender destabilizes the binary (Beemyn et al., 2005). Risk
of emotional and physical violence coupled with an absence of appropriate housing necessitates the provision of more options for
trans* students.
