confidence was the first area, followed by initiative and administrative/time management.
While listed earlier as the most important skill
for entry-level professionals to have, almost
25% of the respondents stated that they were
not seeing interpersonal skills, including both
patience and communication. One stated that
"any difficult conversation is hard for them.
Dealing with disagreement, anger, sadness,
despair, etc." Other areas that were not seen
in entry-level professionals included diversity
or intercultural competence and supervision.
One participant stated that their entry-level
professionals have
a lack of confidence when it comes to enacting
a solution. They seem to want a "green light"
from supervisors before moving ahead.
Sometimes this is OK and even appreciated,
but there are situations where that approach
has a down side too. It would be nice to have a
staff member call and instead of finishing with,

"Given all of this, what should I do?" to say
"Given all of this, this is how I think we should
proceed." Long story made short-they need to
learn empowerment.
This empowerment could be in all areas, but
also in referrals or the proper use of their
helping skills. Another respondent summed
it up this way: "They seem to want to pass off
counseling situations as soon as they can. They
don't want to deal with the complications."
DISCUSSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
The first research question asked, "How frequently are counseling/helping skills courses
required in student affairs graduate preparation programs in the United States?" Eighty
out of 290 programs, or approximately 28%,
required counseling courses, with differences
in the number of courses required and the type
of courses offered. In addition to this finding,
