Leadership and Learning at Arkansas Tech University, worked with
talented graduate students to compile thoughtful discussion questions for each manuscript, providing additional opportunity for reflection and application. Christine Freeman, copy editor for this edition,
provided critical expertise and support in finalizing the publication.
Camille Perlman, managing editor for The Journal, has guided the
process, encouraging and supporting me through each step. And Jennifer Forsythe's graphic design work provides the final step in creating the publication.
In reflecting on the research and scholarship presented in this
volume, I am reminded of the value of human interaction. Whether
it be through an RA hiring process, networking and professional development opportunities, a difficult judicial process, or making your
way in an unfamiliar environment, the human spirit is at the core of
each interaction. We are too often bombarded with tragic stories of
hatred, anger, and mistrust. As educators, we have a responsibility to
know better, to do better, and to educate our students to do the same.
The future depends on our students, and they depend on us. Take
a few moments and listen, really listen to that sometimes annoying
student or colleague, or frustrated parent or confused staff. Recognize
the value each brings to the situation. Recognize your responsibility
in the exchange. Be the positive role model we so desperately need to
make this world a better place.
