Supervision and Job Satisfaction Factors of Residence Directors and Resident Assistants
Discussion Questions
1. The study found that RAs who experience greater role ambiguity have less perceived
synergistic supervision. The author then goes on to suggest that while role ambiguity is
a common part of the RA role, supervision can help mitigate some of the harmful effects
associated with role ambiguity, such as attrition. What tactics, skills, or strategies can
supervisors use to support the retention of RAs when they struggle with multiple roles in
their position?
2. The author reports that synergistic supervision is a larger factor in decreasing RAs' intention
to turnover than it would be for entry-level professionals. What characteristics are different
in those relationships, and why might synergistic supervision be more impactful for a
paraprofessional (RA) than an entry-level one?
3. The author suggests further research into understanding how accountability and availability
impact an RA's role ambiguity and conflict. What might you expect the study to conclude?
4. One recommendation the author proposes is reducing the number of roles for which an
RA is responsible. Given the national climate and increase in mental health concerns in
institutions across the country, how can housing departments determine the appropriate
number and type of roles for which an RA will be held responsible?
