Now, if you will, please indulge this final opportunity for me to
reflect and share. When I began this journey in 2014, we were living
in a different world. Some of us were surviving, while many were
thriving. Our work had meaning, value, and legitimacy for our students and society as a whole. Yes, there was much more work to do,
but collectively we had charted a path for more inclusive and broad
growth and success. As time would have it, a black hole enveloped
our universe, and the sun was to many nothing but a mirage. Our
work and our purpose was questioned as we were forced to spend
time and energy validating and legitimizing who we are and what we
do. My reflection on this time is simple - don't let it all be in vain.
Humility checks, self-reflection, and assessment can be invaluable in
making positive change. As researchers, practitioners, and scholars
we have assumed the tremendous responsibility of educating, training, mentoring, challenging, and supporting future generations of
leaders in our students. The path to success for all of our students,
no matter their identity, may have gotten bumpy or perhaps laden
with detours, but the destination remains the same.
