CONCLUSION
Although SOC is related to environmental
design (Riger & Lavrakas, 1981; Zaff & Devlin,
1998), student experience outcomes associated with SOC between campus residences and
P3 facilities remain an under-researched area.
Results from this comparative analysis reveal
that students in campus residences and P3s
experience negligible differences in SOC outcomes based on housing type. However, students highlight the importance of affordability,
initial housing experiences, peer support, and
building design for engagement as factors that
influence building choice and, in turn, SOC
within student housing.
While there are many factors to be considered before entering into an arrangement governed by a contractual agreement between a
P3 and an institution, findings from this study
suggest that SOC should not be a concern
preventing this partnership. However, price
continues to be a significant factor in student
housing selection, and P3s are driven to a different end point (i.e., net profit). Universities
should ensure that P3 goals remain complementary to the institution's mission and
needs. An ideal scenario allows for a symbiotic
relationship in which both parties thrive while
enhancing desirable student outcomes.
