Letter from the Editor

In this issue,
readers will find
a blend of articles
that mostly center
around the idea
of partnerships
and community.

Welcome to the first regular issue of The Journal of College and University Student Housing for 2020-my first as editor. The torch was
officially passed to me from Suzanne Price in January, and I have
been busy learning the ropes since then! It is truly a pleasure and
honor to serve the ACUHO-I organization in this way. My sincere
thanks goes out to Suzanne for her editorship over the past several
years; I appreciate her mentorship, guidance, and leadership during
her time of service to the Journal. I would also like to acknowledge
the outstanding associate editor team-Denise Davidson, James
Penven, and Kerri Smith-for their leadership, attention to detail,
and collegiality. It was a privilege to learn the editorial ropes with
them as a fellow associate editor, and I am honored to serve in the
editor role now. Finally, a special shout out is in order to Camille
Perlman at the ACUHO-I Central Office, who has been an immense
help (and very patient with all my questions!) as we've transitioned
between editors.
In this issue, readers will find a blend of articles that mostly
center around the idea of partnerships and community. Kristin Renn
offers a look into how peer residential staff work to promote holistic
student success for residents in their buildings. Shannon Dean and
Stephanie Dailey explore academic, personal, and social advantages
and challenges for students who participated in a STEM LLC. Chris
Heasley, Katie Boone, and Denise Davidson studied differences in
residential students' sense of community based on their lived experience in campus residences versus P3 housing. Phia Salter, Dustin
Grabsch, Jaren Crist, Jagadesh Lagisetty, Lane Dyer, and Estephanie
Olvera expanded upon an environmental assessment framework
to conduct a sociocultural analysis of residential academic support

spaces. And, finally, Deborah Worley revisits Marvin Beamer's 1974
article about four notions of community in residence halls (reprinted
in this issue) and explores how this topic has evolved in the past
(almost) five decades.
Many volunteers and several devoted staff contribute to the
process of publishing The Journal of College and University Student
Housing. The aforementioned associate editors guide and mold the
process, overseeing teams of talented and dedicated reviewers. Our
copy editor for this issue (and many past issues), Christine Freeman,
carefully, quickly, and professionally handles this important step
towards publication. Jennifer Forsythe shared her talents as the
graphic designer for this issue. Finally, the staff in the Department of Housing and Residential Life at Arkansas Tech University
provided thoughtful and insightful discussion questions for each
article in this issue. I am confident there is something useful here
for everyone who reads it. Enjoy the articles, utilize the discussion
questions, and be thoughtful about how you can use and apply the
information from these pages.
