LGBTQ+ SUPPORTIVE PRACTICES in college and university
housing must extend beyond cursory policies and
practice. Applying a critical framework, The Traditionally
Heterogendered Institution (THI), this study explores the
experiences of 16 LGBTQ+ students navigating college and
university housing. Findings illustrate how colleges and
universities continue to reify heterogendered norms in
housing practices, therefore "othering" them against a
cisgender and heterosexual norm. This study encourages
college and university housing professionals to center
LGBTQ+ students in their practices and poses critical
questions to consider how practitioners can work to
dismantle the conditions of the THI.

College and university housing programs provide foundational experiences for many undergraduate students. Scholars and practitioners consistently demonstrated the value of living on campus,
particularly as it related to supporting student persistence, development, involvement on campus, and success (Braxton, Doyle,
Hartley, Hirschy, Jones, & McLendon, 2014; Pascarella & Terenzini,
2005). The LGBTQ+ community frequently experienced campus
environments as exclusionary and hostile (Kortegast, 2017; Nicolazzo, Marine, & Wagner, 2018; Pryor, Ta, & Hart, 2016). Advancing Preston and Hoffman's (2015) framework of the Traditionally
Heterogendered Institution (THI), this study explores how undergraduate students navigate college and university housing environments that (re)produce traditionally heterogendered values and
norms. We also provide recommendations for practitioners to
reform campus housing policies and practices to resist traditionally
heterogendered norms and values, which serve to limit possibilities for, and ultimately harm, LGBTQ+ college students. This study
addresses how college and university housing practices impact the
experiences of LGBTQ+ students at Traditionally Heterogendered
Institutions (THIs).
