would have on straight and cisgender students,
their education, and their understanding of humanity and how all live together in this world.
As Paul Wellstone stated, "We all do better
when we all do better," and centering the most
marginalized, in this case LGBTQ+ students,
will provide more opportunities to create intentional, thriving, and inclusive housing
communities for all students (Peterson, 2011,
para. 1). Also, consider the possible impact
on straight and cisgender students' behavior
towards LGBTQ+ students if institutions and
their policies and practices did not treat queer
and trans students as "other" or "in need of
accommodation" (Preston & Hoffman, 2015).
This shift would aid in the development of a
welcoming and inclusive institutional culture
for LGBTQ+ students in college and university
housing and across campuses more generally.

CONCLUSION
More questions than answers remain. We encourage college and university housing administrators to consider how the THI manifests in
their workplaces to continue to keep queer and
trans students on the margins. As LGBTQ+
students continue to experience harassment
and discrimination within college and university housing environments, practitioners must
thoughtfully consider ways to disrupt the pervasive violence experienced within these important settings. Although peer engagement and
support are significant indicators of students'
social support, administrators have even more
power to prepare and equip staff with the tools
to offer the affirming and nurturing environment that is expected of college and university
housing spaces. To do this, practitioners must
evaluate how housing departments can shift

towards inclusive policies and practices that
disrupt the conditions of the THI and center
the needs and safety of the most marginalized
student populations.
