experience to colleagues during a Crossing the
Line activity:
It was a Crossing the Line exercise during
Residence Life Training. I was surrounded by
all of these fabulous, wonderful queer people
in my life, and it was the first time that I knew
that it was okay. I definitely wasn't fully out,
then I crossed the line, and I remember just
breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that I was
in a space where people didn't even bat an
eye. They didn't question. They didn't wonder.
They just accepted me. So, I have been out
to the people that I love and value since that
point.
What was most impactful for Leigh was immediate tacit acceptance. Leigh mustered the

courage to cross the line, and they did not
need a grandiose showering of applause or a
string of subsequent deep conversations with
coworkers. Leigh experienced being one of
the team, not the different one on the team.
By joining a space for colleagues to disclose
important identities during professional staff
trainings, Leigh chose to live their life authentically, where personal lives need not be sheltered in lieu of professional lives.
Forest (they/them), an entry-level professional in Washington, highlighted similar
levels of tacit acceptance from colleagues as
impactful to their employment experience
because having supportive colleagues has sustained their desires to continue and advance in
higher education:
