Integrated into daily campus life, these original buildings and their quiet, park-like setting reﬂect the college’s deep-rooted foundation and tradition. According to lead project architect John Beck, the identity of Mount St. Mary’s is “understood and cherished by the local community that has grown around it for so many decades. Mount St. Mary’s design and marketing challenge was not in determining its brand identity, but rather in maintaining the continuity of its signature architectural and cultural style as it expands and modernizes,” Beck notes. “The priority is to keep the architectural identity of the historic campus consistent.” When the college’s growth required additional residential space, the school wanted a design to complement the neighboring historic structures that surrounded the building site. A previous housing project built more than a decade ago was designed to convey the image of a traditional residence hall, says Chinako Miyamoto, assistant director of residence life. “But for Hannon Hall, they wanted to go back to the image of the mansions, while inside creating things that build community, like having student lounges at the end of every ﬂoor, opening out to the hallways, with sitting areas and tables overlooking the campus. Students feel much more connected to this than in the more conventional, older building.” Located directly across the street from the campus centerpiece – the eclectic Doheny Mansion – the new hall, completed last fall, has 26 student rooms (52 beds) as well as residential life ofﬁces in a house-scaled facility with window orientations and covered patios designed to heighten views of the adjacent historic houses. While in keeping with the school’s early 20th-century architectural style, the facilities also meet 21st-century technology needs, such as wireless computer access. Smart Growth and Recycling Become WorldClass Entertainment Unlike Mount St. Mary’s College, where new construction defers to historic 1900s mansions, and Pitzer College, where ultra-modern design supports an environmentally progressive identity, Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, attempted to transform its image in one sweeping move. By turning an abandoned 1950s high school into a world-class performing arts center, the university polished its already sterling reputation for its vital theater program, while gaining accolades for “recycling” an outdated facility.
