There Goes the Neighborhood Little Diversiﬁed Architectural Consulting Blurring the Line Between Building and Landscape Little Diversiﬁed architects created their design with an eye on engaging students with impromptu and planned interactions outside the classroom, as well as providing a balance of public and private spaces. Small, intimate courtyards are interwoven throughout the larger courtyard, allowing students the same range of privacy they have within their individual units. Circulation is the glue that binds these varied spaces together. Reducing the amount of circulation space and placing it in collective view assures day-to-day interaction between and among students. The individual units interlock to form two four-story dwelling bars running north and south. The two bars bend inward at each end to deﬁne a courtyard space. In turn, the contained courtyard space pushes back on the bars at speciﬁc points to form a series of more intimate spaces between the units, small voids in the mass of the building. The ends of the large courtyard remain open to allow morning and evening light to ﬂood the space. Little Diversiﬁed Architectural Consulting (littleonline.com) is located in Charlotte, North Carolina and has designed facilities totaling approximately 25,000 college beds. Pedestrian circulation is contained within the courtyard. Resulting from the unit layouts, the primary circulation occurs at the ground level and on the third level. Meanwhile, small breezeways allow air to move into the central courtyard and serve as another, more intimate, space for the students to gather. Acting like front porches for each block of living units, these shared spaces are for relaxing with neighbors, enjoying the breeze, and watching the activity in the central courtyard and on the surrounding campus. In the courtyard at the east end of the site, the ground plane peels up to become a green lawn under which an idea center emerges. The idea center, lowered to various degrees into the earth, represents a new terrain for gathering, exploration, and quiet study. On its eastern end, the center offers well-lit spaces behind generous windows for both formal and informal gathering. The western end of the center moves deeper into 76 Talking Stick
