Odin is simply a device – one that documents human behavior to facilitate learning and create new lines of communication and interaction. This learning process allows colleges and universities to provide the infrastructure for a richer residential life. a sense of identity and serves as the place to engage neighbors and passers-by. Students have ownership of the zone in front of their door and are encouraged to participate in neighborhood beautiﬁcation. Part of the way they do this is through a computer system and interface that the group named Odin. This device facilitates and coordinates amenity use, functions as a physical and virtual forum for students to communicate within their neighborhood, and provides an efﬁcient feedback loop to campus administrators and service providers. With this device students can monitor amenity use and energy consumption, communicate with the institution and other students, organize individual and group schedules, and be provided with a sense of comfort and security. Included in the building are a number of gathering spaces – called The Niche – for small groups. This space offers a unique sensory experience. Its monolithic molded plastic shell feels much like the cockpit of a small vessel and is the ideal arrangement for promoting interactions on a personal level. There is also a main gathering place, called The Heart. This space engages the outdoors, adjacent neighborhoods, and the greater campus community. It is not functionally prescriptive, but rather transforms and evolves according to the collective will and culture of its current residents.
