First Takes Kullman Builds Bathroom Pods for Rice University PHOTOS: KULLMAN The residence halls at Rice University in Houston, Texas, will soon get to try out a building innovation that is growing in popularity. Soon, 178 Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Modular Bathrooms, or “Bathroom Pods,” will be installed in two of Rice’s new six-story housing facilities. Kullman Buildings Corporation, located in Lebanon, New Jersey, began building the pods in April 2008. The pods, which are built completely offsite, are extremely durable, require low maintenance, and are vandal resistant. They accelerate project time, and they cost up to 50 percent less than conventional on-site construction. “The coordination required to build bathrooms conventionally is neither time-effective nor cost-effective,” said Avi Telyas, owner and CEO of Kullman, in a press release. “We expect the advantages of the GRP Bathroom Pods to spread throughout the country in many markets.” Rice University’s pods will include all-white, wall hung plumbing fixtures; ceiling and wall finishes; and light fixtures. Kullman plans to complete the installation by July. For more information, visit www.kullman.com. The pods are 6 ft. by 8 ft. and have an outer shell constructed of glass-reinforced plastic which is connected to a steel-based frame. mtvU Surveys Students on College Stress and Mental Health MTV’s college network, mtvU, teamed up with the Associated Press in March to conduct a survey of undergraduate students from 40 colleges and universities about student mental health and the effects of stress on their lives. Results showed that 8 in 10 students reported experiencing stress sometimes or frequently over the past three months. Most of this stress resulted from grades, school work, financial concerns, or impending graduation. These stressors caused a lack of motivation in 63 percent of students, creating a number of health concerns such as anxiety, insomnia, and difficulty concentrating. Students expressed an overall hesitant outlook towards seeking professional help to deal with emotional issues. Only 15 percent had received help from a counselor or mental health professional in college, while 7 in 10 students reported they had never considered seeking help for their stress. Even among the 9 percent of students who had considered suicide, only half had considered talking to a counselor or professional. To learn more, visit www.halfofus.com/press.aspx.
