44 CONTINUED Move It their new residences: It’s also the comfort of their electronic spaces. As Berthold explains, “More students are bringing the electronic comforts of home with them to Marquette. Fifteen years ago you were lucky to find one resident on your floor who had the 27-inch television for the big games or the word processor to type history papers. Now, students are bringing their own high-definition televisions, laptops, and gaming consoles.” The familiar comforts of home help students feel more comfortable in their new surroundings and thus better able to build their new lives on campus. This transition is one of the most exciting and challenging parts of students’ lives, and it is the institution’s responsibility to prepare students for this life-changing transition in order to achieve the kind of customer satisfaction that leads to student retention. The key to success is organization and planning. While issues may arise prior to move-in day or during the move-in event, many institutions have tried to forestall problems by emphasizing one crucial element in the process: “planning, planning, and more planning,” as Robinson says. “Putting together a plan that can be easily communicated to students and parents is essential. Flexibility is also important to a successful move-in.” Krawchuk describes the key to a smooth move-in at the University of Alberta as appropriate staffing and organization: “We try to ensure that we have our regular, full-time staff in key areas as they are more knowledgeable with regard to policies and procedures.” Derek Jackson, assistant director of housing and dining services at Kansas State, agrees, adding that the more involved the entire department is in the whole process, the more successful the day can be: “If you impress on your entire department that this is a great opportunity to welcome students and their families to the community, you are going to have satisfied parents and students.” Given the many challenges and opportunities that each campus must face as a result of the changing dynamics and demographics of move-in day, there is one piece of advice, as expressed by Berthold, that can be utilized at every institution: “Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy yourself.
