Snapshot Jason Chokel What’s the biggest issue for the students on your campus right now? The biggest issue is financial aid and affordability. We have so many students using financial aid or private loans. With the economy struggling right now, it is hard for a lot of the students to get the money they need to stay. What’s the biggest issue you see facing the profession right now? Continuing to provide the types of things our students like while challenging them with the types of experiences they need. What makes your campus unique? We sit on airport property. While the students are walking to class, one may go to history class, while the other goes to flight class and then flies to Miami and back in an afternoon’s time. All day long you can watch planes take off and land from most parts of campus. It really took some getting used to. Now, after seven years, it’s no big deal. What resource can’t you live without? My planner and my to-do list. What made you decide to work in housing? If you hadn’t chosen housing, what would your job be? I loved my involvement as an undergraduate student at Wake Forest University. I was heavily involved in RSA and then went on to grad school in College Student Development. If I had not chosen housing, I would have probably ended up in psychology. That was my original degree/major at Wake Forest. When was the last time you awoke to a phone call from work in the middle of the night? Friday, August 1st at 4:00 a.m. Two students were in a fist fight, and the police had to be called. What do you wish was different about your job? Fewer meetings. Facebook: Good or evil? Evil. I don’t understand chatting and messaging all day long to people that you already know. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy chatting, but it is on the sites where you meet new people, make new friends, not to type at someone I sit next to in class all day. Best book you’ve been impressed by? The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable by Patrick Lencioni. I read it this summer as a part of a leadership group I am with here at Embry-Riddle. I couldn’t put it down. It was so realistic and had some very good points that apply to our work. Last meal at a campus dining hall? Ten minutes ago. I ate a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread at our campus Einstein’s bagel shop for dinner. Favorite campus traditions? My favorite traditions according to my location at the time are: Embry-Riddle – 4-day work weeks in the summer Appalachian State – Driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway in October Tennessee – SEC FOOTBALL and being in a crowd of 100,000 people singing “Rocky Top” Wake Forest – Rolling the Quad after beating Duke or Carolina in basketball Associate Director of Residence Life Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach, Florida Talking Stick
