Projects placed at the entrance of two residence halls included the rotating diversity cube and a geometric structure made of recycled post-consumer materials. As part of the effort to make student art more visible, CMU’s art department developed a program called Art Spotting, which installs artwork in various residence hall locations, rotating and replacing them every other month. At Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, for example, one student’s artwork is featured in the Commons, the largest restaurant on campus, according to Janet Walls, associate director of residence life. The artist is Angela Samuels, who approached university representatives with an idea to complete several oil paintings for the Commons area. Her 24 colorful works are now a permanent fixture. The project had a profound effect on Samuels, who was quoted on the university’s Success Stories Web site as saying, “The people and programs here made all the difference in the world.
