and enriches the overall residential experience, it sometimes puts RAs in the position of having to arbitrate cultural conflicts or to resolve problems related to bias or prejudice. The increased accountability, multiple responsibilities, and changing dynamics of being an RA in today’s world make the job difficult. Many outsiders may wonder why anyone would do it, but to insiders it’s obvious. RAs create a home away from home on their floors and they support their residents as brothers and sisters as they help them through painful breakups, late night study sessions, and candid conversations about safe sex and underage drinking. Many will tell you that they have seen their share of drama and hardship, but they will also tell you that it takes just a few residents to say “thank you” to keep them coming back. ts REsidEnt AdvisoR tRAining: tRAditionAl hAll vERsus ApARtmEntstylE housing how can you prepare staff during training? by Curtis G. Erwin A fter working last year in a traditional residence hall, Sarah is now a resident advisor in an apartment-style hall where she hoped her responsibilities might be simpler; maybe the residents wouldn’t need her so much, she thought, because they’d be off in their own separate worlds enjoying the privacy of their own space. What she has discovered, however, is that they need her just as much – but it’s harder to spread herself out in so many ways and in a larger and more segmented physical space. She used to interact often with residents in the central corridors or common spaces of each floor. Now she’s discovering that she rarely sees some of the residents; and social interactions – even brief ones – are rare. But she has come up with a plan. She may spend more time meeting with smaller groups, may have to resort to some online dialogues, and may even have to reach out to each separate apartment on a regular basis. The important thing is that she realizes what she needs to do in order to succeed at this job: be more imaginative and proactive about creating opportunities for interaction, for building a sense of community, and for gathering and disseminating information.
