Just In Spotlight Arizona State University (Tempe, Arizona) Name: Vista del Sol Opened: August 2008 Cost: $130 million Architect: American Campus Communities A pool and sundeck with lounge cabanas, a free tanning salon, a retail plaza, and a movie theater may sound like the makings of a college student’s dream spring break, but students living at the Vista del Sol residence hall at Arizona State University will experience this throughout the school year. The resort-style facility opened this year, though the 2,000 beds were leased months in advance. Residents at Vista del Sol live in fully furnished apartments with private bedrooms that include a full-size bed, a private bathroom, large closets, and cable and Internet. The shared living space of the units features a living room with leatherstyle furniture, full kitchens that include a double sink and garbage disposal, hardwoodstyle floors, and a washer/dryer area. This may sound like more than the average college student can afford, but monthly rent ranges from $450 to $1,000, which is comparable to the school’s newest traditional dorms, says Michael Coakley, associate vice president of student initiatives and executive director of housing. Among other top-ofthe-line amenities, the facility will feature a social lounge with flat-screen televisions; an 8,000-square-foot, 24-hour fitness center; a 23,000-square-foot community center; and an outdoor amphitheater. With one of the highest enrollment numbers in the country, ASU needed the space. “We have a freshman class exceeding 10,000 this year, and Vista del Sol gives us an opportunity to provide housing to upperclassmen that we’ve been kicking out,” says Coakley. ASU teamed up with American Campus Communities to create the multi-building Vista del Sol. More and more colleges and universities are hiring professional real-estate companies to build and manage their residence halls. This means students are getting modern and upgraded living spaces. It also frees up funds for the school: “This is the first residence hall for American Campus Communities and for Arizona State University that the developers are providing all the equity, so there is no debt for the school,” says Coakley. “Working with them gives us an opportunity to build additional housing and allowing money to go to other things.” Talking Stick AmericAN cAmpuS commuNiTieS
