FaCilities When It Rains, It Pours by Von Stange Indoor air quality in the face of natural disasters the University of iowa Iowa’s Mayflower Hall before (upper r) and after the flood (upper l and lower r). On June 15, 2008, Jeff Aaberg got a call on his cell phone. Mayflower Hall, a building of 1,000 residents that had been fortified the previous week by nearly 800 tons of sandbags, was taking on water from the Iowa River in what was described as a “500-year flood.” Aaberg, the assistant director for facilities at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, admits that a million thoughts went through his head. “We had just spent a week pushing the endurance of our staff, and it all went for naught. It was hard to take and demoralizing.” Within the day, two sublevels of the building were under water. At the crest of the flood, 3 1/2 feet of water covered the first floor of the building. Aaberg, on the job for 6 1/2 months at Iowa, knew that he had a difficult road ahead of him. And it became more difficult when Iowa’s president announced on June 29 that Mayflower Hall would reopen for student occupancy in August. Aaberg knew that removing the standing water was only the first step in a long process of cleaning, dehumidifying, and disinfecting and that the most important question to be answered was, What would the air quality in the building be like? Marty Brantley, director of housing services at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, had a similar problem but on a larger scale. He didn’t have to sandbag; the levees were built to do that job. Unfortunately, the levees didn’t hold back the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Pontchartrain. Brantley watched helplessly as Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast and wreaked havoc on his campus in late August of 2005. Nearly every residence hall was affected, many of them with 2 to 5 feet of standing water, and student rooms in 5 of the 13 halls suffered water damage. As Brantley explains, the water itself was only the initial and most obvious problem; his campus ”had no power for four weeks, in the hottest time of year. Most water that entered the buildings left within 10 days. But the water left a lot of issues far past that time.” January + February 2009 21
