the process involves a complicated orchestration of many different factors. What many students don’t realize is that the goal is to produce a complementary and compatible match, not an identical one. Negotiating through the process of living with someone is a valuable opportunity for learning; as one mother advised her daughter, “think about sharing a room as a cross-cultural experience.” tS The gender-neuTrAl QuesTion In the ACUHO-I assignments survey, approximately 30 percent of the respondents indicated that their campus featured gender-neutral housing by floor, suite, or bedroom (about 10 percent for the latter). Some of those respondents were glad to point out how that living option was in support of the campus’ overall mission. Sue Matthews, assistant vice chancellor of student affairs at the University of California, Santa Cruz, notes that their information about gender-neutral housing has a broad reach, appearing in both the student life and housing guides. Part of the description states that the “gender-neutral option is open to any student sensitive to the concerns of transgender people and who wishes to create a positive, affirming living environment in conjunction with that community; gender-neutral housing celebrates the cultural experience of transgender, intersex, and questioning students and their allies.” Kathryn Magura, assignments and systems manager at Oregon State in Corvallis, explains that, as part of their gender-inclusive housing arrangements, they offer upperclass and transfer students an option to live in an apartment setting without a restriction on gender identification. Finally, at the University of California, Berkeley, the Unity House offers students a mixed gender roommate option, as well as an academic seminar based on a theoretical study of gender and sexuality and serving as an outlet for sharing individual experiences.
